Home to so many beautiful places and areas, the list of things to do when you want to go sight seeing in Dutchess County is virtually endless.

There of course some "you can't miss this" type things that everyone is going to want to see and do when it comes time to see the sights.

Bannerman Castle
The Scottish-style castle on the Hudson River was built in the early 1900s

Center located in a former Quaker Meeting House built in 1777.

Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site
Home of Eleanor Roosevelt.. 180 acres of grounds, hiking trails.

Lifelong home of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, including gravesite and Rose Garden area.

The sight seeing in Dutchess County has some magnificent things to recommend it, but aren't they so much better when they are free? Also in Dutchess county are some of the most interesting free and low cost sites to visit and view, that you shouldn't miss :

CCS & Hessel Museum at Bard Collegecontemporary art exhibitions, curated by graduate studentsAnnandale-on-Hudson. 845/758-7598.

Picnic on Mount Beacon: With literally breath taking views of the Hudson River Valley, Mt. Beacon is a great afternoon hike. Follow dirt trails up the mountain and see the remains of the incline railroad. Open 9am to dusk. Trail entrance at the intersection of Howland and Wolcott Avenues in Beacon. 845/473-4440

Sail on the Hudson: Reserve a seat on the “Woody Guthrie” sloop . Available weekday evenings, reservations required. Dock at the Beacon Railroad Plaza. 845/297-7697

Van Wyck Homestead: The 1732 structure once served as an officer’s headquarters for the Continental Army.
open weekends 1pm-4pm. Route 9, Fishkill. 845/896-9560.

Wethersfield's Estate and Gardens: A 1,400-acres country gentleman's estate with more than 10 acres devoted to formal gardens.Clove Valley - and peacocks.
Wednesday, Fridays and Saturday noon-5pm. Off Route 86 in Amenia. 845/373-8037.

Vassar College: Enjoy the spacious campus while investigating art from Egyptian times to the present at the Francis Lehman Loeb Art Museum.
Tuesday-Saturday 10am-5pm and Sundays 1pm-5pm. 124 Raymond Avenue, Poughkeepsie. 845/437-5632.

Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center has more than 1,000-acres. This incredible farm teaches you natural history, ecology and farming. Free nature programs Saturdays and seasonal festivals. Trails and grounds sunrise to sunset for hiking, fishing, birding and snowshoeing. Rt. 9D, Wappingers Falls. Weekdays, 8:45am-4:30pm; Saturday, 9:30am-4:30pm; Sunday, 1-4pm. 845/831-8780.

Poet’s Walk Romantic Landscape Park: 120 acres of gardens, trails, gazebos, and breathtaking views of the Hudson River. Off River Road in Red Hook. 9am to dusk. 845/473-4440
